Desperate Housewives: Shirley Knight who played Rex Van de Kamp's mother, died at 83
Desperate Housewives family is once again in mourning. This Thursday, April 23, we learned of the death of Shirley Knight. The actress known for her prolific career in cinema and on the boards played in several episodes of the series the role of Phyllis Van De Kamp, mother of Rex (the husband of Bree died at the end of season 1). She was 83 years old.

Shirley Knight died at 83
Originally from Kansas, Shirley Knight died on Wednesday April 22 at her family's home in San Marcos, Texas of natural causes at the age of 83. She had started her career in the 1950s both in film and on television. Shirley Knight was twice named to the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress in 1960 for The Dark at the Top of the Stairs and in 1962 for Sweet Bird of Youth . She also shone on stage and won a Tony Award (the equivalent of our Molières) in 1976 for the play Kennedy's Children.
On the TV side, she has been nominated numerous times for the Emmy Awards for her roles in Generation Pub ( Thirtysomething in original version), New York, police and Desperate Housewives . In the series with Eva Longoria, Teri Hatcher, Felicity Huffman and Marcia Cross, Shirley Knight played Phillys Van De Kamp who landed at Wisteria Lane in season 2 after the death of his son. She starred in 5 episodes of the series.
